It might seem that everybody has backgammon tips when they are not playing, but watching. And, to a certain extent, when you learn backgammon ins-and-outs listening to them is a good idea. Now how you roll

It may take more than a few games to get a feel for how you roll your die in certain situations. But, as you do learn backgammon you will come to find that you roll certain combinations more in certain circumstances then in others. Probability tends to go out the window in most of these instances so pay attention. After you get a feel for your rolling tendencies you may feel that you can take a chance every now and again that you may actually roll the combination you need. Remember, however, it’s all just luck or so they say.

Protect the six point

The 24 triangles you see on the board are called points. The first of any real backgammon tips is to protect the six point. The six point is the first or last point of the section that you are in. Any roll of the die will likely require landing on this point in some form. If you can try to tie up this point with two of your pieces, it will make your opponents job that much more difficult.

Take the ‘lovers leap’

Taking ‘lovers Leap’ (as it is sometimes called) involves rolling a five and six when the outgoing six point is unoccupied and you have a piece on the one point in your beginning section. So taking a six and a five simply gets a piece on its way and out of the way.

A balanced board

A balanced board means that all or most of your pieces are in your home section and covering each point with two pieces, or positioned so that they can land on a point in your home board with it covered. You do not want four or five pieces stacked up on the four or five point with several lower points left with one or none.

Stay cool on the back game

Remember the biggest of all backgammon tips; the whole game can change in a heart beat and change again right back to where it started. This is why maintaining a solid even balanced board is so important. It may appear like there’s no chance of you winning and all of a sudden you’ve won.

Be careful what you wish for

Just as above. Making promises to powers above can be dangerous. Wishing for one thing can very easily come back to bite you. You may say ”what kind of tip is that?” Play for a while and you’ll see.
